"Winter" Wildflowers VI

Probably very little explanation needed for this winter wildflower... milkweed is one of the most distinctive forms on the prairie. An interesting study in textures, too... fuzzy in some places, soft in some places, smooth in some places, bumpy...

  1. Do you know what the other milkweed related species is in the prairie? Smaller seed pods.

  2. My guess would be indigo, but that looks more like a legume flower, thus making it part of the pea family....so what is it, Chris??

If I am right, is a prize involved?

  3. I don't know it isn't indigo cause that doesn't have the floaty seeds. The seed pods are very thin.

  4. No, there is a different milkweed that lives in the prairie and has really skinny pods, I think it might be poke milkweed, which has white flowers...(at least, when milkweeds were flowering, I Id'd that milkweed around here); butterflyweed also has narrow seed pods but it's obviously a lot shorter... it's hard to get a good ID guide with all the less-common milkweed varieties in it, no?

  5. Yes I have never been able to ID the other one. Obviously I can spot the butterfly weed. Poke milkweed or Pokeweed. Nice name.
